摇滚乐的始祖其实是节奏蓝调。Rock或Roll，本是黑人俚语，指欢闹、游戏与交欢。
而摇滚乐一词的出现是1952年纽约的一个DJ， Allen Freed，他将Rock跟 Roll结合起来，创造了ROCK 'N' ROLL一词，经他大力推行之后，使这种诞生於50年代的黑白混血音乐曲风，大为流行，变成了现在摇滚乐的专有名词。
ROCK 比较广义的说法，指的是各类型的摇滚乐，如硬式摇滚、重金属、迷幻、前卫、庞克、华丽摇滚、另类、缓飙等等的所有摇滚乐。不过狭义的说法，却又是指60年代的摇滚乐。而ROCK 'N' ROLL指的是盛行於50年代的摇滚乐初期乐风，所以ROCK 'N' ROLL其实归纳於ROCK。
